MECHANICSBURG, PA -- The 20th anniversary Mitch Smith Memorial for sprint cars will be presented at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday evening, July 3. Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 7:45. The winner of the 30-lap feature will earn $10,000, which makes this the richest event of Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek. The Mitch Smith Memorial was begun in 1989 to honor the memory of the late Linglestown resident, who was one of the all-time greats of Central Pennsylvania sprint car racing. Smith, the winner of 27 sprint car features at Williams Grove, was elected to the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame on the first ballot. Friday night's program will consist of time trials, qualifying heats, a B-Main and a 30-lap feature for sprint cars. There will be no support division. A fireworks display will also be presented. Stevie Smith won the first Mitch Smith Memorial on July 3, 1989, exactly 20 years ago tonight. Smith will be one of the favorites again this year. He is the recently crowned Ohio Speedweek champion and comes into the Mitch Smith Memorial with a Pa. Speedweek win at Bedford Speedway on Sunday. Brian Montieth opened Speedweek with a victory in the Kevin Gobrecht Memorial at Lincoln Saturday. Four-time All Star champion Chad Kemenah won at Grandview Speedway on Tuesday night and Montieth was in victory lane at Williams Grove Thursday. Other Williams Grove contenders will include current Sutliff Auto Group point leader Todd Shaffer, who won the Mitch Smith Memorial in 1998 and Doug Esh, who won the race last year. Other former winners who are expected to be in competition tonight include Fred Rahmer, Greg Hodnett, Keith Kauffman and Don Kreitz, Jr. General admission will be $20 for adults, $10 for those between the ages of 13 and 20 with children under 12 admitted free of charge. |

MECHANICSBURG, PA -- After being close on a number of occasions this season, Brian Montieth finally got to victory lane at Williams Grove Speedway after winning the 25-lap Speedweek sprint car feature Thursday night. Montieth started sixth and moved into the fourth position on lap two while Chris Meleason was pacing the field. Meleason started on the pole and beat Fred Rahmer into the first turn. For the first eleven laps Meleason was able to keep Rahmer at bay. A restart following a caution period on lap twelve dramatically altered the outcome of the race. Meleason, who had been running the high side of the race track to perfection, chose the low line into turn one on the restart. Rahmer was also intent on taking that inside line and the two collided with Meleason crashing into the guard rail and Rahmer flipping over it. Although neither driver was injured, they were unable to continue.

At this point Montieth inherited the lead. Greg Hodnett stayed within striking distance for the final 14 laps but was never able to challenge Montieth and settled for second place. Mark Smith moved from his 10th starting spot to finish third with Stevie Smith fourth and Daryn Pittman fifth. Sutliff Auto Group point leader Todd Shaffer was sixth. Justin Henderson earned the Coliseum Hard Charger award by moving from 19th to 7th. Mike Erdley, Cody Darrah and Alan Krimes completed the top ten. |

Polimeda Rarin' to Return to Action with ARDC |

By Mark Kielblock Felton, DE - Frank Polimeda is in his third year with the Neptune Research Spike/Mopar no.44 team in ARDC competition. Each season has seen him compete for race wins and the ARDC championship, but the 2009 season has started out on the most positive note yet. Polimeda took the season opener at Big Diamond and currently leads the point standings by 103 points over Bruce Buckwalter, Jr. The only drawback? Lack of activity for the motivated racer from Ft. Lee, NJ. When asked how his season was going, he hesitated and laughed, "Few and far between is how I would describe it." ARDC has lost two scheduled shows at Williams Grove to rain, and a recent rainout at Bridgeport NJ on the 1/4 mile bullring (rescheduled for July 25) created what will be a three week gap in the schedule. The wingless midgets get back on track at Accord Speedway on Friday night July 10, following that up with a Saturday night date at Williams Grove Speedway. That's about the only negative Polimeda could see in his season to date. The upside? A new for 2009 pairing with legendary ARDC head wrench Milt Acquilini. "Milt has had quite an impact on our team in a short time," Polimeda emphasized. "He has such a great track record and history in midget racing and in auto racing in general. He's been a real shot in the arm to the team. In the past we've had a hard time getting the whole package together week in and week out. He keeps our car running strong every race."

Bullring Blitz: Brandon, SD—July 1, 2009—For the last couple of years, Joey Saldana has been a master of the big, fast half-mile tracks that the World of Outlaws visit. This season he and his team are showing their versatility by winning a number of times on short tracks, those 3/8-mile and shorter. Of his 11 wins this season, seven have come on short tracks. This weekend he'll have a chance to compete twice more on high-banked bullrings, as the World of Outlaws open the Independence Day weekend on Friday, July 3 at Huset's Speedway in South Dakota, followed by a stop at Eagle Raceway in Nebraska on Saturday, July 4. He was victorious last weekend on a tight, high-banked short track at U.S. 36 Raceway in Missouri. “We've been pretty good on the short tracks this year,” said Saldana. “Hopefully we can continue that at Sioux Falls (Huset's Speedway) and Eagle (Raceway). If we can continue to improve on our qualifying positions, then we'll put ourselves in a position to win. That's what you need to do out here is be in a position to win each night.” |

THUNDER ON THE HILL BEATS MOTHER NATURE, , DUANE HOWARD TOPS MODIFIED FIELD AT GRANDVIEW TUESDAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA . . . . . . . .It was a night of many winners, especially for the big crowd of race fans who braved the bad weather conditions that hovered around the Grandview Speedway on Tuesday evening. Despite rain, hail and severe thunder storms, the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presented by Lee Myles Transmissions and Auto Care beat all the odds and completed the scheduled Pennsylvania Sprint Speed Week Series and 358 Modified Double header program. The show started on time with time trials, six heat races and two consolations completed well before 9 PM. But then the rain began to fall forcing a one hour delay. Never-the-less, the show was completed at 11:32 PM with Chad Kemenah of Finley, Ohio pocketing the $5,000 winner's share for the 35 lap sprint feature as Duane Howard won the night cap, the twenty-five lap 358 Modified feature. Brandon, SD-- June 29, 2009—After Mother Nature was victorious in the World of Outlaws first scheduled event of the season at Huset's Speedway in South Dakota back in early May, the series returns to the high-banked bullring on Friday, July 3 to kick off the Holiday weekend with a full night of racing. The event will be the first of six consecutive races on tracks 3/8-mile or smaller as the schedule really picks up in the next week and a half. Craig Dollansky won both of the World of Outlaws races at Huset's Speedway last season. In the last eight races at the track, there have been seven different winners, with Dollansky the only repeat victor in that span.
