2008 World of Outlaws Season Review: Jason Sides
World of Outlaws
Written by Tony Veneziano
Concord, NC— November 19, 2008—Hardwork, determination and sprint car racing are what Jason Sides knows best. He combined those three elements again this past season as he took to the road with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.

When the dust settled, the 2003 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year had racked up 17 Top-10 finishes, with three of those being Top-Five performances and he was 13th in the series championship standings. He raced his way into the Crane Cams Dash 16 times in 2008 to earn Top-10 starting spots in A-Feature events. He did this all mainly with one crew member, doing much of the work on his race car himself, as well as driving the truck and trailer from race to race.

“I guess it is a lot of determination and we just enjoy racing,” Sides said earlier this season when asked about what it takes to be successful and stay motivated on the road with the World of Outlaws, with the countless miles spent driving from track to track and the endless hours of work on the race car.

Chuck Amati Remembered as One of the Original Outlaws
World of Outlaws
Written by Tony Veneziano
Concord, NC— November 19, 2008—Chuck Amati was an “Outlaw” long before the inaugural 1978 World of Outlaws season. For over 40 years he raced from coast-to-coast chasing wins, and when he took his helmet off for the final time in 2002, he had accumulated hundreds of them in his career in a numbers of different types of race cars.

The World of Outlaws and the entire racing community mourn the loss of the Hall of Fame driver, who passed away on Tuesday, November 18 at the age of 68 in his home state of Illinois, after suffering a massive heart attack while driving.

Amati will always be remember as “The One Armed Bandit,”  a nickname he earned on a night, when he sustained an injury to his right arm and devised a harness to hold the arm in place in his lap, driving using his left arm. The arm would eventually heal, though the nickname stuck with him for the rest of his career and contributed to him being one of the most colorful drivers to ever climb into a sprint car.

2008 ARDC PPG Best Appearing Car Award Bruce Buckwalter, Sr.
American Racer Drivers Club
Written by Mark Kielblock
By Mark Kielblock

Take a look at the Bruce Buckwalter Jr. driven BDB Graphics no. 83 owned by Bruce Buckwalter, Sr. as it passes by and we dare you not to stand at attention and put your hand over your heart. The Star Spangled, Red White and Blue liveried graphics look that patriotic and that good. Good enough to be voted by the fans as 2008 ARDC PPG Best Appearing Car. This year’s PPG Best Appearing Car Award was decided by a vote of the fans with ballot boxes installed at Susquehanna Speedway Park and Grandview Speedway.

Buckwalter Jr. did the Graphics on the sharp looking no. 83 and also has his business BDB Graphics available to racers to keep their cars looking sharp. “It keeps me busy in the off season, and I try to help the racers out by offering reasonable prices,” Buckwalter explained. Buckwalter is able to turn a car around in three to four days. This past year he turned out 39 cars, including his own PPG Award winning machine, the Steve Buckwalter no. 0, Brett Arndt’s no.46 and Andy Martin’s back up car no. 71. There was another ARDC car that was most noteworthy on Buckwalter’s resume. “I did the Two Dogs Racing no. 27 that Randy Monroe took to the Chili Bowl and that one won “Best Appearing Car” out of 285 entries.”

World of Outlaws
Written by Tony Veneziano
Concord, NC— November 14, 2008—After learning all that he could as a rookie in 2007 with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, Chad Hillier was geared up for another run with the series in 2008 and continued to gain priceless experience and confidence in his second full season on the road.

The native of Burlington, Washington, who is the only driver in the history of Skagit Speedway to win a championship in all three sprint car divisions at the track, finished the season a very solid 15th in the championship point standings with the World of Outlaws on the strength of six Top-10 finishes, driving for Washington native Dave DeWitt.

“I can’t thank Dave (DeWitt) enough for giving us the opportunity to come out here for our second full year,” shared Hillier. “I know it was a big financial burden on everyone this year, especially with the weather. It was another great experience being out here.”

World of Outlaws
Written by Tony Veneziano
Concord, NC— November 12, 2008—Lucas Wolfe knew it would be no easy task taking to the road full-time time with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series in 2008, for the first time in his career, and on top of being a rookie and visiting countless tracks for the first time in his career, his season was interrupted for two months as he recovered from a back injury sustained in June. Despite missing 22 races as he recovered from the injury, he was able to claim the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award, adding his name to an illustrious list of past recipients of the honor, which includes three-time defending champion Donny Schatz, as well as Joey Saldana, Kerry Madsen, Chad Kemenah and Kraig Kinser among others.

The native of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania picked up nine Top-10 finishes during his rookie campaign, including a season-best runner-up performance late in the season in his first visit to North Central Speedway in Minnesota.

Kennedy Tops PA305Sprints Frequent Contenders
Driver/Team News
Written by Rod Ort

Ageless Jim Kennedy tops the list of drivers that will be recognized at the PA305Sprints meeting this weekend at the Family House Restaurant in Mifflintown. Kennedy attended every race on the schedule in 2008 and was the only competitor to do so.  He also picked up a win at Port Royal winning there for the first time in 23 years and was a highlight of the racing season in central PA.

The series which does not expect its teams to race every week started a “frequent contender” fund last year that helps reward the top teams that attend races.  It was the 10th anniversary for the series which has had basically the same rules package since day one. Strict adherence to Racesaver rules have maintained close competition and kept costs in check throughout the history of the series. Racers like Kennedy who is 73 and as young as 16 can compete on an affordable budget.
